A very rare piece, this celebratory novelty honors the 1909 National League Champion Pirates, who would go on to edge the Detroit Tigers in a seven-game Fall Classic. Arranged on the celluloid item (which features a pocket mirror on its reverse side) are photographs of nineteen Pirates players and the inscription "Pittsburg National League Champions 1909." Among the Bucs pictured are Hall of Famers Honus Wagner, Vic Willis and Player/Manager Fred Clarke (who broke a Game 5 deadlock with a 7th-inning homer despite having hit just three round trippers during the entire 1909 season). Interestingly, the Pirates won their crown by triumphing in every odd-numbered game, an unusual feat that was not to be accomplished again until the 1962 Yankees turned the trick. In overall EX condition, the 2-1/4"-diameter item's celluloid component concedes only minor wear with a slightly bumpy surface, and the mirror displays an acceptable degree of natural silver loss. An exceptional tribute piece, featuring crystal-clear portraits!
