Shortly after World War I, the Reading (Pennsylvania) Aces were franchised in the International League and -- much like other teams of this period and caliber -- they were intensely celebrated by their local fans. Not lost to the adulation was the regional bakery, Kolbs Mothers' Bread, who sponsored a pin issue featuring the area's diamond celebrities. The issue first appeared in 1922 and was then modified a bit to continue in '23 -- thereby generating a total of 32 different pins. These feature 7/8"-diameter, black-and-white photo portraits. The most noteworthy element in the issue (and in this collection) is Chief Bender, who managed the team, and the scarcer entry of Gus Getz is also present. Includes: Bill Barrett, Chief Bender (stains/toning), Myrl Brown, Fred Carts, Nig Clarke, Gus Getz, Frank Gilhooley, Hinkey Haines, Francis Karpp, Martin, Otto Pahlman, John Scott, Fred Thomas (cello crack) and Myles Thomas. All but two of the items (Carts and Clarke) retain a paper insert in the reverse identifying their manufacturer, Bastian Brothers. EX to EX/MT condition except as noted.
