This replica St. Louis Stars Negro League Jersey was worn by Mark McGwire in two regular season games during his record breaking 70 home run season. The gray knit road jersey is lettered "St. Louis" across the chest with "25" on the reverse. All letters and numbers are in blue. A red "star" patch appears on the left sleeve. A "Mitchell & Ness" label is in the collar, below which is a white "50" size tag. A "Cooperstown Collection" label is on the left front tail and below that is a white felt patch with "Heritage 8-1998" stitched in black. The jersey exhibits minimal wear and is in Excellent condition. Original and unaltered. This jersey was worn as part of the Atlanta Braves Heritage Weekend celebration and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from a Braves team official. The certificate reads in part: "This letter certifies that the item of sports memorabilia which accompanies this document has been worn by St. Louis Cardinal - Mark McGwire Worn during the Braves Heritage Weekend on August 1st and August 2nd , 1998." It is signed by Danny Goodwin, Executive Director of the Atlanta Braves Foundation, and dated "8/22/98." 1998 was one of baseball's most memorable and exciting seasons due to Mark McGwire's pursuit, and eventual shattering, of Roger Maris' single season home run record. His final total of 70 home runs that season is widely considered to be the greatest single season accomplishment in the history of sports. Guaranteed authentic items used or worn by McGwire during that historic season are exceedingly rare. Major League players are generally only issued two or three sets of uniforms per year and one of McGwire's 1998 Cardinals uniforms (the record breaker) now permanently resides in baseball's Hall of Fame. This unique example, though worn by "Big Mac" for just two games during his historic record setting season, offers the collector a fantastic and rare opportunity to purchase one of the finest documented 1998 McGwire game worn items in existence. An incredible one-of-a-kind item worn by McGwire during what was perhaps the greatest season ever enjoyed by a Major League player, baseball or otherwise, and a worthy centerpiece to any sports collection.
