An exceptionally rare item, this early-1970's Oakland Raiders home jersey worn by Fred Biletnikoff was one of a very limited number of jerseys used as prototypes by team owner Al Davis for consideration as an alternate jersey color and style. Davis sought a "new look" during this dureen-to-mesh transition period and joined another style, air-mesh fabric, which was introduced and used for two to three cycles. This particular heirloom was given by the legendary wide-out to a friend and co-worker in the Raiders organization, and has since landed in our possession. The silver mesh pullover garment features "BILETNIKOFF" heat pressed on the nameplate on the jersey's back in black lettering. The Hall of Famer's number "25" has been heat transferred in white-outlined black characters on the front, back and sleeves, and the Raiders' white-outlined black stripe pattern adorns both sleeve openings. White-black-and-silver stretch ribbed cotton surrounds the neck opening, and a pair of "Sand-Knit" manufacturer's tags, one denoting the jersey's size "LARGE," the other a "Raiders Exclusivity" tag, are stitched on the lower left of the front side of the piece. Biletnikoff has signed the item on the back in black Sharpie with strength resulting in about "8" quality. This scarce piece, which was worn in at least one preseason intra-squad game, demonstrates light use as sweat stains are evident on the inside of the neck collar. Ultimately, the decision was made not to implement this style garment by the roguish Al Davis. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS, Steve Grad/PSA DNA and James Spence Authentication. LOA from Lou Lampson.
