When it comes to Tiger Woods at the Masters, we all know the routine: Round 1 ... Round 2 ... Round 3 ... any shirt will do. But for the final round on Sunday, Tiger takes to the links in his trusty, immediately recognizable, red Nike polo. As if to proclaim, "Take aim—I'm your target!" he puts the rest of the field on notice that, once again, the sports world's pre-eminent competitor is on the prowl. In 2006 at Augusta, Woods—seeking to defend his title and capture his fifth Masters victory in the previous 10 years—adhered to his "red shirt" tradition, donning this very polo for the final round. It was a turbulent period in Woods' life, however, due to his father's failing health. Despite his best efforts, Tiger finished third. Earl Woods died three weeks later.
Tiger's iconic shirt from that fateful Sunday, April 9, 2006, displays the white Nike "swoosh" on the left chest, and stitched on the back, just below the collar, is the integrated "TW" emblem that designates Woods' own brand of links regalia. The left sleeve carries a sewn-on metallic strip that also exhibits the "TW" symbol. Affixed within the collar is a "Tiger Woods" label with the accompanying flap tag revealing, "M M M - Made in Malaysia."
Paramount in importance, Tiger graced the front of the piece with a carefully executed, black Sharpie signature, "Tiger Woods" (perfect "10"). What's more, Woods himself acknowledged the singularity of the item by adding "1/1" to note that this shirt is the only such example of its kind. An Upper Deck Authentication (UDA) sticker resides below the emphatically bold and unusually large scripting, and its corresponding UDA certificate of authenticity (which refers to the color of the shirt as being, technically speaking, "coral") reads as follows: "Tiger Woods Autographed 2006 Masters Tournament-Worn Nike Polo: This tournament-worn Nike polo is autographed by Tiger Woods. Tiger wore this coral polo during the final round of the 2006 Masters Tournament. Woods' signature was witnessed by an Upper Deck Authenticated representative as part of UDA's patented 5-step process. The enclosed Nike polo is genuine and authentic as being tournament-worn by Tiger Woods and was legally procured directly from the athlete. This item is a 1 of 1."
It is difficult to overstate the immense significance of this offering. Tiger Woods is arguably the greatest golfer in history—as well as one of the most dominant athletes in the annals of all sports—and the Sunday final-round "red shirt" is his calling card at the Masters. Any article of his signed apparel from any round of any tournament is a cause for collector celebration (in large part because the Woods family releases very, very few items for public consumption). To our knowledge, this is the only final day "red shirt" from any tournament—let alone the fabled Masters—that has ever been offered publicly. And it is further enhanced by the tremendous Woods signature and iron-clad UDA provenance. Indeed, outside of Tiger Woods' own personal collection, this Masters-worn polo is perhaps the single-most important memento of Tiger's entire career! There are two accompanying color 8" x 10" photos of Tiger Woods in this shirt and the green Masters jacket along with Phil Mickelson, also in green Masters jacket. LOA from Legendary Auctions.
