Class of 1939 inductee Eddie Collins signed scant few of any HOF postcard varieties (whether 1939-43 Sepia or 1944-52 Albertype) before his death in 1951. It is estimated that fewer than a half-dozen examples total have ever surfaced publicly—one of which sold at auction for just shy of $20,000 in 2009.

This superior offering distinguishes itself as the earliest possible Eddie Collins HOF plaque postcard: A 1939 SEPIA TYPE 1 published before the famed 1939 inaugural Hall of Fame induction ceremony which celebrated both Cooperstown's grand opening and baseball's 100th anniversary.

The reverse-side text that officially designates the postcard as a pre-ceremony Type 1 specimen reads, "Base ball was invented in Cooperstown, New York, by Abner Doubleday and first played there in 1839. National interest centers in the Centennial Celebration in 1939 at Cooperstown." (Type 2s do not contain that second sentence and instead conclude, "The National Base Ball Museum and Hall of Fame and Doubleday Field are maintained here as a Shrine to the national game.")

Collins' large, prominent, robust signature technically rates "7-8" in strength while presenting much nicer. Condition is EX/MT with faint frontal show-through from the reverse side's printing and surface impressions, plus discreet corner lightening from long-term contact with album mounting tabs.Encapsulated Authentic by PSA/DNA. Full LOA from JSA.

It is important to note that in addition to the Collins and Ruth Hall of Fame Plaque Postcards in this LIVE auction, we will also be showcasing 30 other signed Black and White HOF Plaque Postcards in our August 27-28 catalog auction—all of which originate from the very same fresh-to-the-hobby collection that was acquired in the Philadelphia area back in the 1970s.
