Opportunities to acquire Willie Mays game worn jerseys are certainly few and far between, especially those in as fine a state of preservation as the example offered here. This impressive San Francisco Giants road flannel was worn by the legendary "Say Hey Kid" in 1971. The button-down garment features "San Francisco" across the chest in black-on-orange tackle twill and Mays' number "24" on the back in like fashion. The collar and sleeve openings bear orange-black-orange piping accents. A Wilson main label size 42 with laundry instructions appears on the left front tail with a small cream-colored felt swatch reading "1971" in black stitching. Inside the collar is another small cream-colored swatch with "Mays" in black stitching. All original as issued. Moderate wear with large stain spots on front and back. The jersey is exceptional in regard to both its aesthetic appeal and its significance. Willie Mays was simply one of the greatest athletes in baseball history. Few players, before or since, have ever demonstrated the all-around skills showcased by Mays in his 22 seasons on the diamond. Currently fourth all-time in home runs with 660, Mays would almost certainly have topped Ruth's record of 714 had he not missed nearly two full seasons due to military service in 1953 and 1954. Widely regarded as the best center fielder of his era, Mays was a triple threat on offense, able to hit for average, power and steal bases. Mays captured four home run titles, four stolen base titles and one batting title over the course of his career. Following the 1969 season Mays was named by the Sporting News as the 1960s Player of the Decade. Mays has signed the front right ("8") and front left ("7") in black marker. Accompanying the jersey is a signed letter from Willie Mays. LOA from JSA. LOA from Legendary Auctions.
